Back to Dental Implants

Long-lasting, natural-looking, and completely stable and secure, implant-retained dentures offer a smile-enhancing alternative to traditional dentures.

Working similarly to traditional dentures, implant-retained dentures offer patients a way to replace multiple teeth at once, with the added benefits of implants’ stability and comfort.

Traditional dentures are held in place with an adhesive – usually a dental glue, strip or powder – which can be messy, hard to use, and lead to an unstable experience for the patient.

These traditional dentures can easily come loose, and slippages can make eating, speaking, and smiling difficult, leading to bone density loss in the jaw and other support structures. Implant-retained dentures address all these issues while still providing the patient with a healthy set of brand-new teeth.

FAQs

What are the treatment steps for implant retained dentures?

  • We’ll first perform an X-ray or CBCT scan to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for this treatment.
  • At your next appointment, we’ll insert your implants – this will be done under local anaesthetic so you’re comfortable and pain-free throughout.
  • We’ll place temporary dentures, or you can wear your current dentures at home.
  • There’ll be a month or two waiting period while the implants fuse with the jawbone.
  • We’ll place your permanent, personal dentures.

How are the dentures held in place?

Instead of using a dental adhesive to hold the dentures in place, implant-retained dentures use a magnetic or frictional force.

Can I wear my current dentures with implants?

Some patients may be able to continue using their current dentures indefinitely, but this will depend slightly on their age and quality. This can be a great cost—and time-effective solution for patients who use their current dentures in this way.

How many implants will be placed?

The exact number of implants we place will depend on the individual patient and their needs. If we’re replacing teeth in the upper jaw, we will place a minimum of four implants, while lower jaw replacement can need as few as two implants.
